For me, this band embodies the epitome of Germany's small music scene. From Berlin, 'Von Wegen Lisbeth' song lyrics are about - duh - Berlin, especially the motives of the unimportant and dull everyday moments. In 'Westkreuz', frontman Matthias Rohde sings about the gentrification of Berlin - alas, the elevator at the station still continues to stink.
This track from the early 70's is not only going to boggle your mind but your whole body. You can almost feel the groove of the dancefloors in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Unburdened from the Belgian colonisation, the sound of psychedelic Rumba became a symbol for liberation and took over a good part of Central Africa's nightclubs. Rumba continues to groove on in the Congo and elsewhere.
Contemplating the ever-changing cycles in our sky, this song reminds us of something inherently stable in our lives: that each day will be followed by the next. Навсегда, the song's title and refrain, also means eternal.
Russian indie band around Sergej Sirotkin is quite popular with the younger Russian audience. Some time ago, the chic bands were singing in English but with the change back to an enhanced patriotism since 2014, even progressive movements have embraced the Russian language.
On the track of 'Sinnerman', Abd Al Malik raps about a man crossing the strait of Gibraltar. The direction in which he is crossing stays quite unclear until the end of the song: desperately disappointed by his life in Europe, he sails to Morocco. I'd love to give you a complete translation of his very lyrical lines, but it's much too complex and intertwined to disentangle here. Give it a listen!
